A book of Halachic Responsa, Avkas Rochel was first published in Salonika in 1791. Many of the responses are dated from the author's stay in Tzfat when he headed the local Bais Din. At the time, the Safed Beis Din was very prestigious and Halachic questions were sent there from Rabanim all over the world. A number of the responses deal with the upheaval caused by the aftermath of Spanish and Portuguese expulsions. One of the more famous responses is a ruling that frees Torah scholars from all forms of tax.
